SYPHILIS: YOU MIGHT HAVE SYPHILIS ACCORDING TO THIS
Syphilis is a chronic bacterial infection that can be transmitted through sexual contact.
It is caused by a type of bacteria known as Treponema pallidum.
Syphilis can be challenging to diagnose. Someone can have it without showing any symptoms for years.
However,the earlier symptoms discovered,the better. Syphilis that remains untreated for a long time can cause major damage to important organs such as heart and the brain.
HOW'S SYPHILIS SPREAD
The only way syphilis is spread is through direct contact with syphilis chancres or sores.
These develop in the;
- mouth
- penis
- vagina
- anus
Babies can contract syphilis if their mother has untreated infection. This is called congenital syphilis.
It can also be transmitted through blood transfusions, although that is extraordinarily rare.
Contrary to myth,you cannot contract syphilis by;
Sharing a toilet
Wearing another person's clothes
Using another person's eating utensils
This is because the bacteria that cause syphilis can't live for very long outside human body.
Apart from painless chancres/ sores and swollen throat in secondary stages, there are other symptoms of syphilis including
headaches, swollen lymph nodes, fatigue,fever, weight loss,hair loss, aching joints.
These symptoms will go away if only the person has got treatment!
Some of the tertiary stage effects of syphilis include,
blindness,loss of hearing,mental health conditions, memory loss, destruction of soft tissue and bone, heart disease.
Babies born with congenital syphilis may develop:
* developmental delays
* seizures ( as discussed earlier in epilepsy)
* rashes
* anemia
* jaundice
* Fever and infectious sores
Syphilis is 100% curable if you follow your doctor's advice and full dose of antibiotics administered.
Penicillin is the main treatment for syphilis during pregnancy, primary and secondary syphilis are also easy to treat with penicillin injection.
